The House for Books is a Grade II listed Georgian home refurbishment for an artist and writer in Islington. Archmongers’ redesign included the accommodation of an extensive book collection. The sheer volume required a system that allowed the books to be shelved two rows deep. In response to the small scale of the rooms Archmongers designed a system of vertical supports and box shelves. This allowed glimpses of the original walls to enlarge the space and protect the listed Georgian skirting and cornicing. The shelves were fabricated from birch-faced plywood due to its strong timber and beautiful grain and colour.
